While driving through Utah on our way to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, we were lucky enough to find a small band of wild horses very close to the road. We pulled over and I started shooting pictures as fast as I could, because I knew the opportunity wouldn't last very long. Naturally the horses weren't very happy with our presence, and they started slowly moving away. The mare and foal closest to us were being left behind because the baby was still sleeping. As the others moved farther away, the mare began to fret. She finally raised her front foot and gave him a motherly poke. In an instant the baby was up and they were gone to join the others. And my photography opportunity was over! I used a couple of my own Paint horses as color models for the piece, since all the horses in the group were solid colored.
