Released to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Marvin the Martian. Identified in the original script of Chuck Jones' Haredevil Hare (which bowed in theaters July 24, 1948) as Commander X-2, Marvin along with his faithful companion K-9, has landed on the moon in a mission from Mars to obliterate the Earth. Working with Mike Maltese, his long-time story man, Jones created one of his most memorable characters in X-2, a character so focused on universal domination that he was impervious to disaster.
"Marvin is one of those mysterious creatures that come out of the sky or up the stairs late at night. You don't know what he thinks, and you don't want to know...He is a Martian, and you cannot expect to find much personality in there. I gave him certain amount of gesture, but he expresses little passion; instead of howling with anger and excruciating pain when his plans lie in ruins, he merely and carefully says, ‘Oh dear, back to the old drawing board.'
"For some reason, the manufacturer of Marvin's shoes, which we all wore as kids, believed that we were likely to run into things with our ankles, so a pad covered the ankle. My father knew better, and he always tacked a piece of protective metal around the front of any new shoes before he allowed us to wear them. This effectively delayed our kicking the toes out."
