Can one conquer oneself, one's emotions? Can one
rise above self? Embracing defeat of self relents
intelligence, encourages the spirit, and reveals the
soldier in a war with yourself for yourself...in an
attempt to be in harmony with the world.
Struggle is the inertia of progress. It is exhilarating,
fulfilling, yet the battle is perpetuated as the
complexity of life embraces us. As we grow in our
struggle, the more we strive to conquer our own
self, the higher we rise.
In "Rise Above", Henry Asencio depicts a
centralized figure with arms raised in a display of
self-resistance. Through the expression of the
charcoal, the artist focuses on the musculature as a
metaphor for self-contained inner struggle.
The drawing lends itself to a universal sense of
contained celebration and triumph through inner
growth. "Rise Above" is a tribute to the perpetual
struggle for the hardest victory - conquering
oneself.
